Workshop on communities of practice at Soliway

During the Soliway event in Annemasse, France, we facilitated a workshop on Communities of Practice to an audience of aid workers.

Cité de la Solidarité Internationale invited Humanitarian Designers to facilitate a workshop for their humanitarian audience. At a time when the humanitarian sector faced financial crisis and instability, we wanted to bring something thoughtful to practitioners.

With our experience and expertise of communities of practice, we thought this could become a very interesting conversation centered on collaboration with fewer resources, decentralised discussions, and shared decision-making power.

We structured the space so people could think and learn together, to map the challenges they faced and understand the opportunities that communities of practice could bring.

FACILITATION

A dozen participants joined the workshop, including experienced community managers and students. We ran participatory interviews to draw out collective intelligence. The closing plenary at the end gave everyone space to share what they had learned, and it showed us clearly how communities of practice could work in the humanitarian sector. Students saw new pathways for connection and learning. The experienced managers left with new methods and perspectives they could apply to their own work. This feedback reassured us that we had chosen the right topic.
